What is the role of activist art in society? Activist art started in full effect post the Vietnam war with the rise of AIDS in America. The AIDS epidemic hit the art world hard and activist art came into resurgence as a mark against Vietnam and civil unrest. Activist art feared over-complication leading to muddying of the waters or re-stereotyping the group seeking representation. The art piece named “Detournement” by Krzgsztof Wodiczko took symbols of political power and projected onto them the critique of the power itself. Activist art is based on the propaganda effect not form with aesthetic appeal. Act-up of AIDS activism was the first fight against ‘hate’ equating passivisity to murder. Act-up also went to reappropriate words and meanings about gay life and abortion. Activist art put a peaceful use of power to art about the distribution of power in politics usually in a shocking, ironic, and informative manner. What is the societal importance of Feminist art? Societal view on women and how sex plays into culture both on women and general ‘patriarchal culture’ boxes women to stereotypical roles placed on by men. In society there is a man centered focus where women have fought against an unfair standard of inferiority. Feminist art seeks to open the mind of the public to these injustices and the over emphasis on sexuality. Feminist art sought to unlock the door all people not just women but also minorities. It presents the notion that women and men are equal. Feminist art redefines the role of a woman in society. She does not belong in the kitchen, she is not inferior, and she is capable of much more than men believe. I think feminist art is one of my favorite genres because of how passionate it presents this dilemma that has gone on for far too long unquestioned. What is the importance of Minimalism? Minimalism is art that is expressed in a minimalistic nature. Minimalism shows the concept that less is more. Although much complexity is involved in the production of this artwork, the final product looks simplistic. The shapes are simple geometry and forms with solid colors. Minimalism teaches society that not much is needed for aesthetic appeal. People have too much clutter of items burdening and controlling society. Minimalism seeks to reduce to its base concept, as opposed to abstracts showing the whole concept in a different perspective. Minimalism seeks to represent the whole idea to a singular or select objects or painting. Artists in minimalism seek to capture ideas in seemingly simplistic lines and shapes, as opposed to drawing out the emotion or the object itself. What is the role of pop art and assemblage on mass culture? Art relies on the society around us. Because of the impact and control of consumerism mass culture is centered around production. The use of everyday objects show the impact of the viewer’s buying habits being exposed as just a part of itself being part of a capitalist system. The person’s part of the system, making them less valuable than the item being sold. The use of cultural objects to critique society changes how artists see the very point of art. Pop/assemblage use consumerism to challenge it through the buying or the representation of the materials being ultimately as pointless as the system itself views the people. Assemblage is buying materials and reaffirms the artist’s identity as counter-culture by showing a wider audience who didn’t buy the product. What are some different styles of modern art? Some examnples include surrealism, naturalistic and biomorphic surrealism which all relate to the breakdown of reality in its altered state. It shows a shift in reality from the artist’s perspective whereas gestural, abstract, versus medium specificity shows opposite takes representing a perceived emotional truth through action versus realive inaction. Abstract art style including the dripping technique exposes the formalist method of representation, drawing form to form. Abstract represents the need to create what we have at a core emotional level instead of just the visual reproduction. The use of hard brush strokes versus dropping seemingly disorganized style exposes the individual’s understanding of what art is versus an artist's interpretation, leaving it up to mostly the viewer of the art.
