Societal Importance of Feminist Art

What is the societal importance of Feminist art?

Societal view on women and how sex plays into culture both on women and general ‘patriarchal culture’ boxes women to stereotypical roles placed on by men. In society there is a man centered focus where women have fought against an unfair standard of inferiority. Feminist art seeks to open the mind of the public to these injustices and the over emphasis on sexuality. Feminist art sought to unlock the door all people not just women but also minorities. It presents the notion that women and men are equal. Feminist art redefines the role of a woman in society. She does not belong in the kitchen, she is not inferior, and she is capable of much more than men believe. I think feminist art is one of my favorite genres because of how passionate it presents this dilemma that has gone on for far too long unquestioned. It raises issues that get people to question the old ways of doing things. I believe that it frees the silence placed upon women in a very creative and non harmful manner. The art speaks for itself showing many ironies that exist in society. It is controversial because of how revolutionary the idea of equality is and how many people it speaks to. I am proud of feminist artists because of how important of a role they play in furthering the progression of society and freeing women.

Beneath is a imnage of a feminist video by Martha Rosler called Semiotics of the Kitchen that shows the irony of the imposed gender role of women's jobs in a kitchen. In the video she aggressively uses a multitude of kitchen utensils in a way that looks exaggerated and uncomfortable. She successfully shows that there is a lot of arduous work that goes into cooking and that the task of using the utensils is almost like slave job that takes strenuous effort to accomplish. She shows that women are given very little credit for how hard they work to make a meal and serve it to their family. There is a notion of sarcasm in the video that shows the rediculousness of the task of making a meal everyday. I think this video is superb and it demonstrates the slave-like role that is ironic in nature for women to cook arduously in a kitchen everyday. I appreciate feminist videos and art like this because it puts the irony right in your face.
